This is the epitome of 'original’, the paradigm of 'out of left field’. And this is listenable to in a way that is both involving and bemusing at the same time.

Imagine crossing Folk with a Baroque String Section and producing it with heavy metal overtones – are you confused yet? On 'Draconian Crackdown’ the sound of heavy metal guitars is actually produced using distorted and fuzzed cellos!

All acoustic instruments – Cello, Violins, Tympani, Marching Drums, Bhodran, flute, tambourine – and all female vocals combining on songs such as '1816, The Year Without A Summer’ or 'Draconian Crackdown’ or 'Oh, Bring Back The Egg Unbroken’ suggest a combination of historical and classical themes and the voices themselves are accented enough to give a modern feel to the music – very Lily Allen!

Rasputina Oh Perilous World 1.80$ BUY NOW

All the songs on this curio were written by Melora Creager over the last two years or so and although they appear to have a historical bent they are actually based on real life and modern events – 'Choose Me For Champion’ is based on a translation of a speech by Osama Bin-Laden and 'Old Yellowcake Breaking News’ culls images and impressions of the fall and destruction of Fallujah – and tells the story of an imaginary war on the resistance on Pitcairn Island – last landfall of the Bounty Mutineers – by the Queen of Florida!

The very existence of Rasputina suggests that music is becoming more complex as people discard the lightweight fluff of dance and R&B and look for material that succeeds on more than one level and, like bands such as Devotchka, Rasputina can offer a much greater experience than wriggling naked flesh and self-aggrandising raps. They expose fans to more and more involving themes and complex images without copping an attitude or talking down to their audience.

This is the sixth album from Rasputina and they have been a well kept secret until now: 'Oh Perilous World’ should change that with all speed.
